This is going to be very hard to write but I've been thinking about it for weeks and really wanted to do this. Eleven years ago today, on October 23, 1998, Corey's mom, Diane Konow, went to be with the Lord. Unfortunately I never knew her so all I have to go on are lots of wonderful stories and a few pictures. The stories are all so precious of a mother and wife who worked hard, took care of her family, and gave of her time and talents at every available opportunity, and the pictures tell the same stories of such a beautiful and unselfish person. They are all inspirations to me and I can only hope to some day be the special "glue" that she was that held her family so tightly together day after day. I know that I missed out not knowing her and it makes me so sad. I'm so sad that I'll never get to ask her how to make vegetable soup or chicken casserole JUST the way Corey likes it, or how she would lift their spirits after it rained for days and they couldn't get their corn and beans in fast enough, or who she thought Corey looked like when he was born, or what the perfect gift would be for us to get Joe for his birthday, or what helped her with her morning sickness when she was pregnant with the boys.
Today is a bittersweet day. My heart literally breaks as I remember the story Corey told me about the phone call he received 11 years ago today telling him to get to the hospital ASAP...my heart literally breaks just imagining what it would be like to lose my soul mate and best friend and the life we shared together...my heart literally breaks just imagining what it would be like to lose my mother whether I was 26 years old or 56 years old after she had taken care of me for so long...and most of all my heart literally breaks knowing that our child, who is growing in my belly right now, will never get to crawl up in their "Nano's" lap and hug and kiss her and tell her how much they love her. BUT what gets me through a day like this is one of the sweetest truths I know and that is the fact that someday I will get to meet her in heaven and what a wonderful meeting that will be! That gives me comfort!...and the fact that I know she's an "angel among us" now who watches over her family and comforts and takes care of us all each day, just like she always did.
I want to share one of my favorite scriptures with you. It inspires me each time I read it and it seems so appropriate for today. There are 3 people who have touched my life in such special ways and I think of them every time I hear this scripture...my own mother, my Grandmama (mom's mom) and Corey's mom...
PROVERBS 31:10-12 and 25-31
A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her;
"Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all."
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
